Depart Perth City and journey along the Great Northern Highway to picturesque Chittering - the start of your food and culture journey. Stop in at the famous Bindoon Bakehous for a sweet treat and pop next door to stock up on all things local at The Locavore Store.
Witness the ever-changing scenery of rural WA and escape the bustle of city life. You can stop along the way and enjoy the country ambience and local produce at one of Chittering's seven wineries.
Further north you will reach New Norcia, Australia's only Monastic Town. The buildings and artworks here are fascinating blend of Spanish and Australian architecture and the atmosphere is wonderfully peaceful and serene. The New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery tells the story of the trials and tribulations of the early pioneers and on show all the early basic tools and equipment or photos to show how they developed and farmed the land. New Norcia is famous for its unique architecture and now-a-days, the monks are famous for their wine, olive oil, nut cake and other produce.
Be sure to pop into the local Visitor Centre for tastings from the famous New Norcia bakery and samples of the region's olive oil and local produce.
From New Norcia take the Calingiri-New Norcia Road to Bolgart. Bolgart is a small Wheatbelt town and railway siding, which claims the first settled farm in the district and features the historic Bolgart Hotel built in 1916 and the Bolgart Bell Tower.
Turn right off the main drag and you will find the OBH of the Bush, The Bolgart Hotel. The 108-year-old hotel is a double story brick construction with gabled corrugated iron roof. Built in 1916, the Bolgart Hotel is one of only six state hotels built in Western Australia and is considered a significant piece of Wheatbelt history.
As a community, 16 local families banded together in mid-2020 to purchase the building and breathe some life into the old girl again. Considered vital to preserve the heart of the small community for generations to come; a place to gather during good times and the tough, share stories of the past and make new memories.
